Collection: Thelonious Monk (1917–1982)
Thelonious Sphere Monk was born on October 10, 1917, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and raised in New York City's San Juan Hill neighborhood. A largely self-taught pianist, he began playing in Harlem churches and rent parties as a teenager, developing a style that would eventually redefine jazz harmony.
In the early 1940s, Monk became the house pianist at Minton's Playhouse in Harlem, a legendary after-hours club where bebop was being born. Alongside Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Kenny Clarke, he helped forge the new music — though his own voice was always distinctly his own. Where bebop prized velocity and ornamentation, Monk favored space, silence, and angular dissonance.
His compositions from this era — 'Round Midnight, Straight, No Chaser, Blue Monk, Well, You Needn't — became jazz standards, remarkable for their wit, tension, and architectural logic. Yet commercial success eluded him for years. He lost his New York cabaret card in 1951 (due to a wrongful drug charge), barring him from performing in clubs for six critical years.
His fortunes turned when he signed with Riverside Records in 1955. A celebrated 1957 residency at the Five Spot in New York — with tenor saxophonist John Coltrane — brought him widespread recognition. He appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1964, a rare honor for a jazz musician.
Monk continued to tour and record through the early 1970s before retreating from public life due to declining health. He spent his final years in the home of his longtime patron, Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter, in Weehawken, New Jersey, where he died on February 17, 1982.
He was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation in 2006 — a belated but fitting tribute to one of the most original musical minds of the twentieth century.
