Collection: Jimmy Smith (1925–2005)
Jimmy Smith was one of the most influential figures in jazz history, widely credited with revolutionizing the role of the Hammond B-3 organ in modern music. Born James Oscar Smith on December 8, 1925, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, he grew up in a musical household and showed prodigious talent from an early age, winning a radio talent contest as a child pianist.
After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Smith studied piano and bass at the Ornstein School of Music in Philadelphia. His career-defining moment came in the early 1950s when he discovered the Hammond B-3 organ. He threw himself into mastering the instrument with obsessive dedication, reportedly practicing up to 20 hours a day. His efforts paid off spectacularly — he developed a technique that made the organ a legitimate jazz solo instrument rather than merely a background presence.
Smith burst onto the national scene in 1956 with a legendary three-night stand at Harlem's Small's Paradise club, and his Blue Note recordings throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s — including A Date with Jimmy Smith, The Sermon, and Back at the Chicken Shack — became landmark albums in the soul jazz and hard bop genres. His muscular, blues-drenched playing style influenced virtually every organist who followed, from Larry Young to Joey DeFrancesco.
In the 1960s, he signed with Verve Records and achieved broader commercial success, recording lush big-band arrangements with producer Creed Taylor. He continued performing and recording prolifically for decades, maintaining a devoted global following well into his later years.
Jimmy Smith passed away on February 8, 2005, in Scottsdale, Arizona, leaving behind a legacy as the undisputed master of the jazz organ. He was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
