Her big break came in 1934, when, at just 17, she won an amateur night competition at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Spotted by bandleader Chick Webb, she joined his orchestra and quickly became its star attraction. After Webb's death in 1939, Ella led his band before embarking on a solo career that would span six decades.
