Collection: Ella Fitzgerald (1917–1996)
Ella Fitzgerald, often called the "First Lady of Song," was one of the most celebrated jazz vocalists in history. Born on April 25, 1917, in Newport News, Virginia, she was raised primarily in Yonkers, New York, after moving north with her mother. Her early life was marked by hardship — following her mother's death, she spent time in an orphanage and struggled through difficult teen years.
Her big break came in 1934, when, at just 17, she won an amateur night competition at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Spotted by bandleader Chick Webb, she joined his orchestra and quickly became its star attraction. Her 1938 recording of A-Tisket, A-Tasket — a playful reworking of a nursery rhyme — became a massive hit and launched her into national fame.
After Webb's death in 1939, Ella led his band before embarking on a solo career that would span six decades. Her partnership with producer Norman Granz and his Verve Records label gave rise to her legendary Songbook series — studio albums devoted to the works of composers like Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, and Irving Berlin — recordings widely regarded as definitive interpretations of the American songbook.
Blessed with a remarkable three-octave range, flawless intonation, and an extraordinary gift for scat singing, Ella performed with jazz giants including Louis Armstrong, Oscar Peterson, and Count Basie, and sold over 40 million albums worldwide.
She received numerous accolades, including 13 Grammy Awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1992), and the National Medal of Arts. She passed away on June 15, 1996, leaving behind an unmatched musical legacy that continues to inspire singers around the world.
