Collection: Booker Ervin (1930–1970)
Booker Telleferro Ervin Jr. was born on October 31, 1930, in Denison, Texas. His father played trombone with Buddy Tate and introduced Booker to music at an early age. Originally a trombonist, he taught himself the tenor saxophone while serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1953. After his service, he enrolled at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he studied music theory, before moving to Tulsa to join fellow Texan and bandleader Ernie Fields.
In May 1958, Ervin moved to New York City, where he quickly befriended bassist Charles Mingus and joined the celebrated Mingus Jazz Workshop. This creative partnership led to a string of landmark recordings, including the 1959 masterpiece Mingus Ah-Um. Mingus was demanding but nurtured creativity and encouraged improvisation, and Ervin soon developed a reputation as one of New York's finest young saxophonists.
Ervin was a true original — a highly distinctive tenor player with a hard, passionate tone and an emotional style still rooted in chordal improvisation. Beyond his work with Mingus, he recorded several celebrated solo albums for Prestige Records, including The Blues Book, The Space Book, The Freedom Book, and The Song Book.
Despite the breadth of his talent, Ervin remained underappreciated in jazz. Feeling undervalued at home, he relocated to Europe in October 1964, performing at Copenhagen's Montmartre Club and the Blue Note Club in Paris, among other venues. During this period he recorded prolifically, made radio appearances, and performed at several jazz festivals, including a guest slot at the 1965 Berlin Jazz Festival where he delivered a remarkable 25-minute improvisation.
Ervin died of kidney disease on August 31, 1970, in New York City, at just 39 years old. He is widely regarded as one of the underrated greats of jazz history — a true individualist whose influence has only grown in the decades since his passing.
